Differences between liposuction treatment and fat freezing
There are several ways to remove unwanted fat deposits on your body, today we will talk about two. Cool sculpting and Liposuction. These procedures vary dramatically in their approach, yet produce the same outcome. The question is which do you go with? Let’s break these two procedures differences down so that you can decide what’s best for you.
Liposuction is the most common and older of the two procedures being around since the 80’s. There are an array of different liposuction procedures including
- Fluid Assisted Liposuction (FAL)
- Power Assisted Liposuction (PAL)
- Laser Assisted Liposuction (LAL)
- Suction Assisted Lipectomy (SAL) (the original)
- Ultrasound Assisted Liposuction (UAL)
None of these procedures are superior over the other, they have different approaches but all work well. Liposuction can be performed under sedation, full general anesthesia or local anesthesia. How much fat needs to be removed and the area (s) to be treated will determine which type of anesthesia you’ll need. Rule of thumb is the more areas you need treatment on, the more anesthesia you’ll need. Swelling and bruising are common, however the incision made for liposuction is small with minimal scarring. A client can get back to light exercise after just a few days, however there is a recovery period that takes a few weeks to take its course.
Unlike liposuction, cool sculpting doesn’t require anesthesia at all as it is a non-invasive procedure. The cool sculpting system has a gel pad that is placed over the treatment area and is then disposed. Suction is activated when a cooling head is placed over the pad. There’s a liquid that flows through a headpiece on the base of the machine and it sucks the treatment area into the head which in turn freezes the fat. The cooling head is removed after an hour or so and the frozen area is then massaged. It is a bit uncomfortable during the initial tissue suction, however the cooling head gets to work fast and numbs the area so there isn’t any pain when massaging. The treated area can feel a bit tender post procedure even though there isn’t much pain during it. Results take a few week to see, just like liposuction.

Liposuction removes more fat in a single session, making it the more aggressive procedure of the two. Clients need several sessions of cool sculpting to get their desired results, because cool sculpting removes less fat per treatment.
Clients considering other cosmetic procedures may want to consider liposuction as they will already be under anesthesia, liposuction takes less treatments than cool sculpting and that would be desirable. Coupled with another procedure such as a tummy tuck, liposuction can have very dramatic results. Another good example of when liposuction is the preferred procedure is when a client would like to add volume to another area and they’d like to do so with their own fat. Liposuction is perfect to transfer fat to another area of the body. If there are many areas a client would like to treat, then liposuction is the preferred procedure as these can all be done at once, rather than many sessions required for cool sculpting.
Cool sculpting is a great options for clients who would like to avoid surgery either for personal reasons or because of health complications, it is the perfect procedure for smaller fatty deposits.
In the end, the choice that’s best for you is determined by a few things. What issues are important to you, how eager you are in removing the fat in a timely manner. If bypassing surgery is important to you, then you’ll have to be content with the less dramatic results of cool sculpting. However if you are in a hurry and would like to see less of the doctor with dramatic results, then liposuction may be what you are looking for.
